I noticed something over the weekend. The rain in June has kept the water levels up. Notice the picture of the cranberry plants. No flowers. No berries.
This probably won’t be a problem for commercial growers, since they can control water levels, but for those of us who like to hang out in bogs in the fall, it could be an issue. And not just one issue. No cranberries could also mean hungry bears. So now I have a picture of myself standing in a bog, ready to fight a bear for the few remaining cranberries, which probably will work out much better for the bear than for me.
In past years with high water I have noticed that some of the plants do have flowers. Since the flowers are underwater, pollination could be an issue, so maybe we need to get scuba gear for the bees so they can pollinate the cranberries. Bears would have berries, we would have berries and everyone would be happy. Even the scuba bees.
Fitting the scuba gear to the bees could be an issue. Any volunteers?
