Region of Queens Paying $150,000 To Try and Remove Lingering Odour

The mayor of the Region of Queens hopes an odour he describes as a “pungent, pointed and offensive smell” is reduced by next month.

The municipality has decided to spend an estimated $150,000 to hire a contractor to de-sludge the primary lagoon at the South Queens Sewage Treatment Plant.

The issue has been ongoing for weeks, causing residents from Liverpool and Brooklyn to complain.

David Dagley says an expert advised them it would be beneficial to take this step.

“It’s a little premature, depending on the life expectancy of the lagoons, but certainly it is contributing to the odour.”

Dagley believes the smell has had a considerable impact on visitors to the town and feels the issue needs to be resolved as quickly as possible.

“On a fine west wind day there is no odour in the town of Liverpool whatsoever, it blows to the ocean. On stormy, rainy days on an east wind, we do pick it up in the Bristol Avenue area. It is dependent on wind direction and weather.

Dagley expects the contractor to be on site next week.

Work to de-sludge the primary lagoon should take roughly two weeks to complete.

The final cost of the project will be funded from the municipality’s Sewer Operating Reserve.
