It was a long day of practice and competition last Thursday, but in the end Sarah Mitton was standing on top.
Mitton captured the gold medal in the women’s shot put at the World University Games in Italy.
The 23 year-old from Brooklyn, Queens County had a throw of 18.31 metres to clinch first place.
She says she’s ecstatic with the result.
“It means the world. It’s my first international medal. I was so overwhelmed, let alone to know that it was going to be gold. This is what I trained for all year.”
Mitton says the support she’s received from Queens County has been amazing throughout her career but especially since she won last week.
“The support I have received in the last 48 hours and my entire career so far is incredible. I’m still trying to get back to everybody. People who I have never even met back East sending me congratulations and cheering me on. It’s incredible.”
Mitton has a busy schedule coming up once she arrives back in Canada this week.
Her schedule includes the national track and field championships from July 25-28 in Montreal.
She will also represent Canada at the Pan American Games in Peru from August 6 to 10.
