Mitton Captures Silver in Women’s Shot Put at Canadian Track and Field Championships

A track and field athlete from Queens County walked away from the national championships in Montreal with a silver medal.

Sarah Mitton of Brooklyn finished second in the senior women’s shot put event with a top throw of 17.37 metres.

The 23 year-old may not have won the national title, but she did qualify to represent Canada at the World Championships in Qatar in October.

For now, Mitton will focus on throwing next weekend at the Pan American Games in Lima, Peru.

“It should be great. It will be my first experience at the Pan Am Games and it is going to be in Peru and that will be an experience to say the least.”

Mitton was named to the Pan American Games team in June.

“They did announce that it was going to be a small team, they did have a selection quota. When you’re thinking of 46 athletes in all of athletics in Canada, you start going through the names and the people you know of. I was very hopeful and I knew I was right in the mix for it.”

Mitton’s training partner, Brittany Crew, won her fourth Canadian women’s shot put title, with a top throw of 18.65 metres.
