LISTENER’S DILEMMA- Total Stranger Mom Is Back In Her Life

A listener wrote in with this dilemma:

I met my birth mother for the first time several months ago. She had abandoned my brother and I when we were babies but wanted to make contact recently after she got sober for the first time in years. (She’s an alcoholic) She’s in poor health and fell off the wagon again last month and was charged by the police after she started a fight outside a local bar. I feel badly for her but I don’t know how to help this woman who is for all intents and purposes a complete stranger to me. Should I walk away until or if she can overcome her addictions or if I stay in contact what is the best way to help her?
