Mahone Bay Mayor Looking to Recognize First Nation Community

The mayor of Mahone Bay is looking to recognize the importance of the first nation community.

David Devenne says there is a difference of opinion if the territory is unceded or ceded through a treaty arrangement.

At a recent meeting, the mayor put forward a motion to have town staff research the issue.

It was fully supported by fellow councillors.

“There is a certain respect I believe we owe to our First Nations partners here in Mahone Bay and I want to ensure that we have the situation correct.”

Devenne expects staff will develop a plan of who they will talk to including First Nation representatives and officials with the Nova Scotia Museum and department of culture and heritage.

He says his hope is recognize First Nations people who had an impact before and after Mahone Bay was incorporated.
