Queens: Equipment Breakdown Causes Delay In Removing Odour

The Region of Queens can rule out tidal wetland along Hank Snow Drive as a cause for a noticeable odour in different areas of Liverpool and Brooklyn.

A wetlands and environmental specialist company reviewed the area in early July.

The company indicates in their report that “there is no visible impairment, loss of function, or other sign of wetland distress that would indicate that the marsh is the cause of the prolonged, persistent and intense odour that the community has been experiencing. Therefore other potential sources of odour should be investigated.”

Mayor David Dagley says it’s welcome news.

“They have been very clear in their message that we should look in other areas for odour as the wetland doesn’t appear, in their expert opinion, to be the cause.”

Work continues to de-sludge aerated lagoons at the wastewater treatment plant after a delay last week due to equipment breakdown.

Dagley says the number of companies that de-sludge are few and far between.

“This is a contractor from New Brunswick that is working on this job and of course they sent their equipment away for a few days and had it rebuilt. We’re looking forward to them catching up by next week.”

The municipality is paying up to $150,000 to complete the work.
