Fire Crews’ Quick Response Saves House In Clearland

A forest fire in Western Shore and woods fire in Clearland kept departments across the South Shore busy yesterday.

Mahone Bay Fire Chief Richard Nowe says his crew arrived at the Clearland fire around 1:45pm to discover flames shooting 20 feet up into the trees.

While the fire was just a fraction of an acre, they had to work quickly.

“There was a house on the other side of that woods so our main objective was get that knocked down so that we didn’t have to worry about it advancing to that home.”

Nowe says they managed to knock the fire down within half an hour with the help of crews and tankers from Martins River, Walden and Lunenburg.

He suspects the Clearland fire was the result of a campfire that may not have been fully extinguished.

“It smoulders in the ground, and people don’t realize this when they have a fire, that it does do that. Then all of a sudden, poof, you have flames and fire going.”

Nowe is reminding people, no one should be lighting fires as the entire province is currently under a burn ban.
