The Great Hummingbird War

And so it continues. I have visited others who put out hummingbird feeders and it’s like a big love fest. Many of the little creatures gather around their feeders, enjoying a peaceful little snack before flying off. There are no fights, no big battles.

Not so around my feeder. It’s a constant war.

You think of hummingbirds as delicate little creatures, but they are not. At least based on how they attack each other around my place, crashing into each other as they battle to lay claim to their very own container of sugar water.

It scares me a bit, since they are flying at high speeds attacking each other and they have rather large spikes attached to the front of their faces. One wrong move and that beak could be buried in a persons forehead. But they seem to have excellent flight control, even in the heat of battle and so far, they haven’t managed to impale me. Yet.

Over the past couple of weeks I watched the daily battles. This one little bird laid claim to the feeder. At least, I think it was the same bird, but they don’t come with name tags. It would perch on this branch just a few feet away from the feeder, the sun at his back to make him harder to see, and wait for another bird to dare try to drink from his feeder. Should another bird come by, he swoops from his perch to run off his opponents.

No sharing around my place. It’s just a battle.
