Fisherman Receives Heavy Fines For Untagged Lobster Traps

An expensive lesson was learned for fishing outside the rules.

Maynard Sinclair Malloy was convicted in July for fishing out of Vogler’s Cove with untagged lobster traps

The incident took place in December 2018 when Fisheries officers charged him with using 26 untagged traps.

Not only was Malloy fined $5,000, he also forfeited the traps and catch valued at $4,300.

Conservation & Protection Supervisor at DFO, Bill Wolfe says people need to understand actions like these won’t be tolerated.

“It shows how DFO and the courts see this as a serious violation when fishing untagged gear.”

Wolfe says people who use untagged traps are generally over-fishing.

“Well if everybody’s over-fishing then the stocks are going to be in trouble.”

Malloy’s Personal Fishing License will also be suspended for the first 21 days of the upcoming season.
