New Metal Roof Coming For Oldest Baptist Church in Nova Scotia

A municipal heritage property has been given the green light for renovations.

The Northwest United Baptist Church on Big Lots Road in Fauxburg currently has an asphalt shingle roof.

The trustees of the church applied to the Municipality of the District of Lunenburg to install a metal roof.

Council approved the motion and councillor Martin Bell feels it is the right thing to do.

“The need for metal roofing seems to be on the increase as our climate changes and when you look at long-term costs of maintaining the building and I think we should support this in any way we can.”

Construction is expected to begin next month.

Planner with the municipality, Byung Jun Kang, says the roof is overdue for replacement.

“As determined by staff, changing of the roof material is not part of the character defining element and wouldn’t impose on the character of the church.”

Built between 1818 and 1820, the Northwest United Baptist Church is the oldest documented Baptist house of worship in Nova Scotia.
