High School Students Back In Scrum As Rugby Returns

Students will be returning to the rugby pitch in Nova Scotia.

The Nova Scotia School Athletic Federation voted to reinstate the sport to the High School Calendar after pulling over safety concerns last spring.

The decision comes as a result of meetings between Rugby Nova Scotia, the Department of Education and Early Child Development and the NSSAF where the groups worked to develop a list of recommendations.

The athletic federation also announced Junior High Flag Rugby was accepted as an official sport.

Rugby Nova Scotia provincial Coach Jack Hanratty says earlier involvement in the sport is a great way for student athletes to learn great fundamental movement and evasion skills before playing the contact game in High School.

CEO of Rugby Canada Allen Vansen says his organization will continue to work closely with Rugby Nova Scotia to ensure that opportunities to participate in rugby are done so in a safe and inclusive environment.
