New Book Promotes Anti-Bullying Message

A Nova Scotian author wants the message of Pink Shirt Day carried throughout the year.

Halifax-based guidance counsellor Heather Topshee has just written a book called “Every Day is Pink Shirt Day.”

Pink Shirt Day began in 2007 after two students, David Shepherd and Travis Price stood up for a classmate who was bullied for wearing a pink shirt.

Topshee is frequently called to make anti-bullying presentation in schools.

“And I realized as I was doing the presentation, there’s lots of stories out there about bullying but there’s none specifically on Pink Shirt Day so I thought, oh I should write one. So I did.”

Topshee says her book borrows from the lessons she teaches in her presentations..

“I always say, bullying ends where kindness begins. and that’s what this story emphasizes.”

A book launch party for “Every Day is Pink Shirt Day” will be held at Woozles bookstore in Halifax on October 2.
