A listener writes:
I’m trying to phrase this dilemma so that I don’t come across as an old grouch – partly because I’m not old and also because I don’t consider myself a grouchy person. I’m just going to say it:
I think baby showers and bridal showers have had their day and should be banished from our culture.
In my opinion they’re a big waste of time, usually an entire afternoon or evening of playing the most moronic, childish games mixed with feeble attempts at embarrassing the person the shower is being held for, then there’s some nonsensical small talk in between the dumb games, followed by your departure with a tacky, cheap gift or prize that usually gets thrown in the garbage the minute you get home.
Would it be worth it for me to just let friends and family know that I’m not available for baby showers and bridal showers or would I get labelled as a spoilsport or worse?
