Wild Mushrooms Anyone?

I like mushrooms. They can be pretty darn tasty, and different mushrooms can have different flavours, which only makes a certain amount of sense.

Over the weekend I noticed a post from a friend on social media saying he was having a mushroom omelet for lunch. Nothing much unusual with that, except for the fact the mushrooms he was using were wild Chanterelle. They looked delicious. Not only that, I think I know where I can find some. Maybe.

The “maybe” is the part that always stops me. Nature has seen fit to create not only delicious Chanterelle mushrooms, which can grow wild in hemlock groves around our province, but, just to keep us on our toes, has also created the false Chanterelle. This is a mushroom that looks almost identical, but has a decidedly different effect on your body. In fact, it will make you pretty sick.

It seems to be like that with a lot of mushrooms around here. We apparently have some pretty tasty ones that pop up in our forests that are quite delicious. Then we have some that look almost the same that will try to kill you. I can’t say with any certainty that I can tell one from another. So I’ll just take a pass on the wild mushrooms, thanks.
