Bathtubs and Cheerios

As more and more of us become “shower only” people, there’s been a lot of discussion about taking out bathtubs to put in bigger, more open showers. Real estate experts have said for years that no one will buy a house without a bathtub. Yet the hottest home renovation trend in New York City these days is ripping out those bathtubs and spending big bucks on wide open, bright, glass-doored showers. It seems that younger Millennials and Generation Zeds just don’t see the the need for a bathtub anymore, since they are exclusively shower people. They lead busy lives and want it fast and convenient.

The same goes for cereal. Sales have been dropping steadily for years because those same quick and easy craving Millennials want something they can grab and go like single-serving high end yogurt that they can just consume and throw away the cup after use. They can’t be bothered washing out the cereal bowl and spoon afterwards. I can understand that, but come on, let’s face it, rinsing off a cereal bowl and spoon is not the same as doing a sink full of dishes or loading the dishwasher.

But the big thing I’d like to point out is that even though I haven’t had cereal in a month (low carb diet) a bowl of Cheerios is tops on my comfort food list. When I’ve had a stressful day, or I’m about to start one, having a bowl of Cheerios takes me back to my carefree childhood days when I didn’t even know what stress was.

I rarely take baths. They take too long and are time-consuming when cleaning up afterwards. But every few months it’s great that we have a bathtub for those days when you’ve overdone it working outside or are just totally stressed out and need to relax. My wife Karen who takes baths more frequently than me, likes to make her bath “an event”. She has her essential oils, scented candles and bath salts as well as a musical playlist that transforms the bathroom into a spa.

Now if I could just find a low carb cereal to enjoy in the bathtub that would be my perfect destressing moment!
