A listener wrote us with this dilemma:
I’ve been married for ten years and the last year or so my husband will go through some strange mood where he becomes very withdrawn and gives me the silent treatment for a week. He talks to our two kids, our dog and our cat but I get the silent treatment. I can’t figure out if I’ve done something wrong or said something that offended him.
Then after a few days he comes out of this phase and has never said anything to suggest that I’ve said or done something to upset him. Is this just his way of dealing with stress?
After half a dozen of these “phases” I’m having trouble letting things go back to normal between us. I am cool to him for a few weeks, but he expects everything to go back to the way it was before his week of not talking to me. I know I’m not helping things by being cool, but I’m at a loss as to how to deal with this every couple of months. Any suggestions?
