RCMP Asking Motorists To Take Care Around School Buses

RCMP are reminding people to stop for school buses with flashing lights.

As part of School Bus Safety Awareness week, police are sharing tips with motorists on how to keep students riding the bus safe.

Tips include being aware of bus stops, stopping for flashing lights, keeping an eye out for kids, and ensuring children line up properly for approaching buses.

Cpl. Jennifer Clarke says students should exercise safe habits as well while waiting for or riding the bus.

“That means no fooling around, and for the kids to remain on the side of the road in safe location while they wait for the bus,” she said.

“Also wait for the bus to come to a complete stop before getting on, and be sure to walk, not run, to the bus.”

Clarke also stressed it is illegal to pass a bus while its lights are flashing.

Those caught illegally passing a bus can be fined of $410 and receive six demerit points on their license.

Clarke says anyone who sees someone illegally pass a bus should report it with as much info as possible.

“Try and get the description of the vehicle, description of the driver,” she said.

“Also if there is anything unique about the vehicle, maybe like a sticker or something they might be able to remember, in small communities that might not be that difficult to track down the driver.”

She says the most important piece of information is the license plate.

Throughout the week, the RCMP will be sharing safety tips on bus safety through their social media.
