Para-Hockey Team Aims To Bring More Eyes To Sport

For the last three years, the Para-Lumberjacks have been the ambassadors for sledge hockey in the South Shore.

With ages ranging from nine to 51, the team competes in various games across the Maritimes, often joining the roster of other teams for tournaments.

However president Dave Waters says despite his hopes to make the sport become more popular in the area, it hasn’t caught on.

He says people often think they can’t participate, but that simply isn’t true.

“One of the beauties is anybody can play Sledge hockey,” he said.

“The team in Bridgewater is probably 60 per cent able-bodied and 40 per cent individuals with some sort of physical impairment.”

The program has no requirements to join, and the team is always looking for more players to hit the ice with.

“We take people any time throughout the year, it doesn’t matter when it is,” he said.

“So if somebody wants to come out and try for a few days, or if someone joins in December or January, sledge hockey is a little different that way. It’s a little different than, say, minor hockey, where you join in September and then play through the year with that same team.”

Waters said the team has a surplus of equipment for anyone interested in trying out, and only basic equipment like helmets and gloves would need to be bought.

The team meets at the LCLC in Bridgewater on Sundays at 4 PM between September and March, and anyone who is interested is welcome to drop by and watch.
