So now we have to change the way we sing our ABCs. Someone figured we needed to adjust that whole L-M-N-O-P thing in the middle because it was too confusing. People couldn’t understand it. They were… gasp… getting the letters confused.
Apparently, there are a lot of people that use the alphabet song to figure out English. The fact that for years we have given the middle letters very little love and just sort of blurted them out in rapid fire fashion is confusing. So now, when you sing the alphabet, you are suppose to slow down the middle part so you can hear the letters distinctly.
I’ll be honest. I’ve never really had a problem with those letters. I sang the song, but could still figure them out.
I do have a problem with the new version of the song. Sure, the old version was a bit rushed in the middle, but it fit the tune. The new one is just not pleasing to my ears. It sounds off. The cadence just seems wrong.
I may get used to it… in time. But I’ve already sung the original version to myself, my children and my grandchildren. It may be a while before I have to teach someone else their A-B-Cs. And I’ll probably get it wrong. At least the song.
