Mom Says Fiddle Dee Dee, You Can’t Have It

A listener writes in with this dilemma:

My father was a farmer and a popular fiddler in our tiny community. Over the years he collected and repaired a number of fiddles. When he passed away, they were hung proudly on the walls of our rec room but sadly neither my son nor my daughter has any musical aptitude so they just gathered dust.

Recently my best friend’s grandson who seems to be able to play just about anything naturally was interested in learning to play the fiddle, so I took the oldest one and had it repaired by an expert in the city and gave it to him. You should hear how he’s taken to it!
Now my son and daughter tell me I should never have done that and they want me to ask for it back. They claim “grampy” promised them a fiddle each. Well, there are two more fiddles on the wall that they can have and that leaves one for me, but I’m certainly not going to ask for it back from my friend’s grandson.

Tell me I’m wrong if I am, but when adult kids move out and leave stuff, unless it’s specifically mentioned that it’s in storage, I should feel free to do whatever I want with it. If my adult son’s soccer net and goalie pads would make some other child happy I think I’m fully within my rights to pass this stuff on to someone where it will make a difference.
