An interesting story out of Dubai this past week. A young guy who makes video content for businesses by day and DJ’s in the clubs at night has won a Nova Scotia Island off the Eastern Shore.
They guy thought it was a prank originally, because the contest opened on April Fools Day. But it was a real promotion by a Dubai bank – Liv who target millennials. Every survey they did showed that global millennials listed Canada in their top 3 destinations. So they scooped up Hurricane Island and gave it away along with the equivalent of 36,000 dollars.
And that got me thinking. If you won an island, would you keep it or sell it? If you kept it, would you buy a boat and spend the money to put in a dock and either a summer home or an all season cottage? Or would it be easier to just list it and take the money?
The real deal breaker for me would be lack of internet. But I’m sure that no internet or cell coverage might be an incentive for some people to keep it. Perfect place to destress.
As a kid, my parents along with another couple owned the only spot that you could get on an island in Musquodoboit Harbour. It was ok for a couple of years to visit on the weekends, but it got old really fast. I’d sell after a year if I owned one now.
