A listener wrote us with this dilemma:
I’m the office administrator for a company of 16 people and I’m dreading the annual Christmas party that’s coming up. And it’s for the most ridiculous reason. There’s a tradition here that everyone gets a gift from the company. And the boss insists that I do all the shopping for the gifts. I’m given a budget of 20 dollars per gift, they all have to be practical gender-neutral gifts and no joke gifts are allowed. I am absolutely terrible at this! Last year I had to sit through staff opening the most inappropriate (for them) gifts, since I can’t address each gift to a particular person. I know some employees really look forward to this part of the Christmas party, but others look so disappointed when they unwrap their gift. My anxiety levels are through the roof and I really don’t want to attend the party this year, but as the administrator for the office I kind of have to.
How can I get out of this task for future years so that I can kick back like everyone else and enjoy the party?
