Is There Something We’re Not Supposed to See?

I should admit, I like conspiracy theories. I just find them amusing, for the most part. Besides, blaming unseen forces for pretty much anything and everything that goes wrong (or right) is rather satisfying.

So I’ve come up with my own. Someone doesn’t want us to see what’s going on in the night sky!

Here’s the thing. There are a lot of meteor showers. A lot of us don’t know about them because we don’t spend a lot of time outdoors at night looking up, but they happen on a fairly regular basis. I’ve long been a fan of the Perseid meteor showers in August, because… it’s August. Sitting around outside at night is a pretty natural thing. It’s fairly warm, but there are other problems.

Many years they seem to fall close to a full moon, which lights up the sky and makes it hard to see them. Then there’s clouds. It’s hard to see the meteor showers or stars or anything when there are clouds in the way.

Over the next night or two there are supposed to be some pretty spectacular meteor showers. They are not supposed to last long, but there are likely to be a lot of them. This is the Monocertoid meteor shower. I’d never heard of it before, but it has some apparently put on some spectacular shows in the past and is expected to do that this year.

So bring on the clouds and the showers. No meteors for you! The forecast does not seem to be cooperating.

It isn’t the first time. Like I say, there are a lot of meteor showers. It’s just seems like every time we get told there is supposed to be a spectacular display of meteors, the weather doesn’t want to play along.

It happens often enough it is starting to make me suspicious. Is there something up there we’re not supposed to see? Are the clouds being caused by aliens because the meteor showers are actually them doing things in the sky? What is really going on.

See… conspiracy theories are fun. We could probably keep that one going for a long time, making a story that would end up sounding pretty reasonable.

And really… if the sky clears and you can watch for the meteors, you’ll probably only get a stiff neck from looking up so long.
