What makes a tradition? If you follow the dictionary definition, the transmission of customs or beliefs from generation to generation, or passing things on in that way. That’s the deal.
So I suppose the Elf on the Shelf thing could be a tradition. It has made it through one generation, so it might qualify, but it’s still creepy.
And that’s part of the charm… the creepiness. The idea that this little elf, sitting around almost unnoticed on a shelf or in a corner is really a spy for Santa Claus. Whatever you do, he’ll be reporting back to Santa.
The “tradition” really only dates back to 2005, when a book came out detailing ways to torture your children in the days leading up to Christmas. Some like the idea, some hate the idea. Really, there are good reasons for both. I am not going to be judgmental. In fact, I wish I would have thought of the idea long ago.
The Elf on the Shelf idea is like a lot of other things. Moderation is key. You know, keep it fun without tipping over until full blown paranoia. Tricking people into being good, even if it’s just for one month a year doesn’t seem so bad.
In fact, I can think of a lot of people who could benefit from the concept. And they’re not all children. Although many of them do act like it.
