What Christmas treat are you looking forward to next week?

I know you’re probably looking forward to Christmas dinner, whether it be turkey or ham, along with all the fixin’s – brussels sprouts, carrots, potatoes, parsnips, and of course dressing or stuffing! Maybe even two kinds of dressing depending on the home! And sauce – cranberry sauce whether from a can or the frozen berries.

But I wanted to bring up some other Maritime Christmas foods that have become tradition for many people. Either as a main course or as nibbly food, we’ve come to love our Lunenburg Pudding, Solomon Gundy and shrimp dip. And, other than Christmas dinner we love our seafood – from lobster and clams, mussels, scallops and oysters to a big fresh fish fillet served pan-fried, roasted or fried.

In between meals, thanks to Maritime hard candy makers like Ganong’s of St Stephen, New Brunswick and Robertson’s of Truro we get to enjoy Chicken Bones, Misty Mints, Satin Mix, Clear Barley Toys and Ribbon Candy. For some of us it’s not Christmas without a Terry’s Chocolate Orange.

And for those of you hosting family and friends from away, you know they have been dreaming all year of their Maritime favourites whether it be seafood or something as mundane as a donair or a Greco Party Pizza.

In all my career I was lucky to only have to spend one Christmas away from Nova Scotia, but I still remember to this day the thought that I had that Christmas. I would trade all the Christmas Turkey Dinners in my future for just one large extra sauce donair!

Tell me your favourite treat at this time of the season on our Facebook page!
