Province Announces Open House Sessions For Workers Affected By Northern Pulp Closure

The province has announced a handful of employment sessions in an effort to do good on their commitment to those affected by the Northern Pulp announcement.

The Province is working with Service Canada and Nova Scotia Works to hold open house sessions for forestry industry workers looking for access to employment programs and services, regardless of their employment status.

The sessions will include career coaching, job search assistance, training, information about Employment Insurance and in some cases funding to help workers find another job.

These sessions are in response to Paper Excellence Canada announcing Northern Pulp would be closing following the province’s denial of their requested extension to the Boat Harbour Act deadline.

Premier Stephen McNeil said the government is already in contact with those directly affected by the mill closure to ensure they are aware of the resources available to them.

“I know this is a time of uncertainty for businesses and workers across the forestry sector,” he said.

“We are committed to supporting them through a variety of programs and services. We will continue to be there throughout this transition for mill workers and others affected in the sector.”

The government also announced its also in the works of hosting information sessions for small business owners impacted by the Boat Harbour decision.

Those sessions will provide information on current opportunities and activities supporting forestry in their region as well as allow them to share their ideas.

A list of employment session dates and locations are listed below.
