A major Canadian-based union is promoting economic growth in Nova Scotia communities by educating residents about … buying “local”! The Canadian Union of Public Employees has launched its “10 Percent Shift” program in Nova Scotia. CUPE-Nova Scotia President Danny Cavanagh says if everyone would use even 10 percent of their incomes on buying local products and services, the economy would be substantially propelled forward. He says: “The more money that people spend locally on local produced products .. around 70 percent of every dollar stays in the comunity and thats a huge boost to the local eceonomy and local businesses and services”. Cavanagh says New Brunswickers and Prince Edward Islanders are also being encouraged to buy locally but the campaign in those provinces has not kicked off as quickly as in Nova Scotia, Quebec and British Columbia. He says CUPE is working with the provincial government on the campaign.
