Think About The Dogs

I spent almost twelve years living in Newfoundland. I wouldn’t trade it for anything, it was a great time.

During those twelve years, I saw my share of snow. There were a couple times I had to take a snow mobile to work. More than once I had to dig myself out of the house, with snow drifted to the top of the doors. A couple times I found my car by spotting the radio antenna sticking out of a drift.

What I’m trying to say is, snow isn’t unusual. It happens. Just not like this last one.

Almost three feet of snow in one storm is not the usual. And I do hope those I know and everyone else in the province is safe.

But as they were in the middle of this monstrous storm, I couldn’t help but think, what about the dogs?

It may sound strange, but I’ve been there. At the time I lived in Newfoundland, I had a small dog. You know. One of those things that weigh about fifteen pounds, but think they’re about a hundred pounds plus. A whole bunch of attitude in a little tiny package. And I distinctly remember more than once having to go out in the middle of a blizzard to clear a spot for the dog to go.

But the snow and the wind Newfoundland were getting the other day would make even that small chore next to impossible. And you just know that no matter how hard you tried to clear a spot, in weather like that your dog is going to give you that “you gotta be kidding” look.

Hopefully the rest of the winter takes it a bit easier on everyone.
