If you happen to be a chicken, you may want to stay far away from Sheffield Mills for the next couple of weeks. It’s Eagle Watch time.
For quite a few years now, people have been tossing dead chickens into a field to attract eagles. It has become quite a sight, and people come from all over.
It started when eagles were an endangered species, which isn’t that long ago. There weren’t many of them around, and winter meant food was hard to come by. So they started putting out excess chicken carcasses for the eagles.
What started as a thing done by individual farmers has now become an organized event. People flock from all over the watch the eagles. Eagles flock from all over for free food.
You might think that with eagles making a comeback the event would have faded somewhat, but that doesn’t seem to be the case. Not everyone knows where to find an eagle or two, so the trip to the valley makes sense for a lot of people. And the chance to see a lot of eagles all at once in one place is not an everyday thing.
I’ll admit, I’ve never been to the Eagle Watch. But I spend time in places where eagles are not uncommon. We’ve sat and watched each other on many occasions. But if you don’t have that chance, maybe take a drive. They are pretty impressive.
