I can’t remember the last time I did anything special for Valentine’s Day. It’s been that long.
Not that we ever really celebrated much. It was always easier to go out to dinner a day or two after or before. Everyone seems determined to do something on February 14, so it is usually much easier to get into restaurant when you don’t want to go on the same day as the rest of the world.
Flowers? I have a wife who doesn’t get the point of the expense. Candy? Am I trying to make her gain weight?
Then, a few years ago, I got lucky… in a way. We started doing the Radiothon. Valentine’s Day became a rather long exhausting day for me. Don’t get me wrong, raising money for the hospital is incredibly rewarding… and tiring.
The fact is, I wouldn’t trade it for anything. The day is a lot of fun… even if I do tend to fall asleep about ten minutes after I get home.
So, to my wife, in case I forget tomorrow… Happy Valentine’s Day.
To everyone else, maybe consider a donation to the Radiothon. It’s better for you than candy and will last longer than flowers.
