Ice Fishing Is Getting Tougher

I was looking at a couple of fishing groups that I follow online the other day. There were the usual pictures of fish and messages from people who can’t wait for April to arrive. There was also a reminder to make sure your ice fishing shack from the ice before April 1.

That doesn’t seem to be much of a problem around here. It used to be a bit of a concern, but I can’t remember when that was.

It wasn’t that long ago. Well, relatively. It may have been in another century, when you actually think about it.

Ice fishing shacks were a common site on the LaHave. Then we seemed to run out of ice. The areas where the shacks were normally located seemed to get smaller and smaller. Then it just sort of petered out.

I know there are people who don’t believe in climate change, but this one is pretty obvious. Ice fishing in this part of the province has gotten quite a bit harder. Not for lack of fish, but for lack of ice.

There are still a few days when you can get out, but a year like this one makes it harder to imagine. Not that open winters are uncommon. They just seem to be getting more common.
