Province Helping Lockeport Build Dunes To Prevent Flooding

Lockeport is getting some provincial help to protect their town from flooding. The provincial government has awarded the town $25,811 to help them finish building dunes. The dunes are made up of rock, sand and tree shrubs and there is currently a section of the town that is exposed. Mayor Darian Huskilson says the money is playing a key part in keeping the community safe. He says, “It seems the last few years, the storms have been getting a little bit more fierce and have been obviously been doing more damage and one of the only defenses that this community has when it comes to storms coming in off the coast and the high tide is the dune structure.” Huskilson says they will start working on the project as soon as possible. The province awarded almost $345,000 to help municipalities reinforce or stabilize infrastructure against the risk of floods.
