Supply Issues Felt at Local Food Bank

Interchurch Food Bank in Bridgewater is feeling the pinch when it comes to food shortages due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Suzanne Stewart, office coordinator for the organization, says they are experiencing issues getting stock and have been told by the grocery stores they can’t fill their bulk orders right now.

“We aren’t worried yet because we do have some stock but we could run into difficulties not having the food to give out because we can’t buy what we need. If we close down, the people who don’t have the money to buy don’t have food, and that’s a concern, ” she said.

Every month the food bank distributes 250-275 orders which translates to roughly 600 people. Those numbers are expected to grow as lay-offs occur and people need extra help.

With new preventative measures being put into place in businesses and homes across the province, Stewart says they have also taken steps to protect clients and staff while continuing to provide an essential service. In addition, the number of people being allowed in at one time and the layout inside have also been adjusted to maintain social distancing.

“People used to be able to come in and pick and choose what they want but now we are just giving out a basic order. We aren’t doing interviews anymore, we are just getting people in and out,”she said.

Stewart says they have a good volunteer base but are actively looking for new volunteers to help out.
