Buying groceries has gotten a little easier for seniors and vulnerable adults in Lunenburg County thanks to a new program.
The United Way of Lunenburg County, Lunenburg County YMCA and Sam’s No Frills have partnered together to offer a free grocery delivery service.
“There are seniors and people with disabilities that have problems getting to the grocery store,” said Coordinator Michael Graves, United Way of Lunenburg County.
“With social distancing in effect they can’t rely on neighbours like they used to, so that is why we set up this service.”
Those using the service must pay for their own groceries but the delivery service is free of charge.
Graves said they became aware the service was needed when they began receiving reports people were having trouble with grocery shopping so they looked at how they could help.
“It’s an important service that is going to benefit people throughout Lunenburg County,” he said.
The YMCA applied for funding from the United Way to get the ball rolling and dedicated a team of 12 volunteers to get the groceries and deliver them to people’s homes.
Kim Roy, YMCA Centre Manager, said people are extremely thankful for the service.
“People that I have talked to have all expressed the hope that this keeps going so that tells me there is a need,” she said.
“We are talking about keeping the service going after the pandemic.”
