Looking For Something New To Cook

It’s easy to get in a bit of a rut, cooking and eating the same things over and over. That’s why favourites become favourites in some ways. We like them, so we tend to use them as our “go to” dishes.

But it’s also nice to try something different for a change. Maybe not big changes, but just enough for something different.

It has been an interesting time, over the past few weeks. I have browsed through many different online recipes, only to not bother going ahead because I am missing an ingredient (which I also forget to add to my list for future trips to the store) or you have something that you know just won’t fly for someone you are cooking for (some people don’t like food spicy enough to set their face on fire… go figure).

I have been looking though. I just haven’t carried through on much.

I have baked a few little things, but not as much as I might have liked. Sourdough, for example, seems like too much of a commitment. You don’t just bake it. You have to spend several days cultivating the starter before you even begin the whole bread process. I’m not sure I spent that much time with my children, let alone food.

Like I say, I have tried a few things that I was pretty sure would work. I tried rouladen, and it turned out pretty good. It needs a bit more practice though. The thing was, I had most of the ingredients on hand.

That would seem to be the big secret. Before I try to expand my home menu, I first have to learn to make better grocery lists.
