Art With Heart Makes LaHave Artist Finalist in NSCAD Student Art Awards

A LaHave native is a finalist in the 2020 NSCAD Student Art Awards.

Ada Denil is a third-year Fine Arts student at NSCAD working towards a BA in Fine Arts, and her sculpture entry Vascular System-Port Campus is something to behold.

Raised by artistic parents, creating art is something she has always been encouraged to do.

“I don’t really know where the journey began and certainly not where it’s going to end but in the past year I have found my spot with sculpture,” she said.

The sculpture is a massive hand-pumped industrial heart that powers the vascular system of the NSCAD waterfront Port Campus.

Comprised of iron rods in the form of a human heart, industrial parts create the surface of the heart and extending from that surface is a network of plastic tubing veins that reach up into the body of the sculpture. When the hand-pump is activated red oil moves through the tubing creating a vascular system.

The idea it is one of participation and input specifically in a school studio work space.

It is about the importance of input in that type of environment to create a space that is exciting to be in and work in, she said.

“The activation of the heart is really key in this piece-I made it as a reminder to myself and all students at NSCAD to put into the space what they want to get out of it.”

Denil is one of ten finalists selected through a self-nomination process. Winners will be selected by a panel and announced in the fall. The winner will receive a $5,000 purchase prize for their artwork that will be part of NSCAD University’s permanent collection; remaining finalists will receive $1,000 each.

After the semester was over Denil had to dismantle and remove the sculpture and it is currently in storage waiting to start beating again.

“It was really intense removing the heart of the campus, so it’s laying in wait,” she said.

Her work has been shown at the Corridor Gallery, Argyle Fine Art and the Company House.
