Are You Wearing Pants?

Apparently, it’s a question more than a few people could answer with a no. People are not wearing pants.

A few weeks back, when the whole work from home thing started, my first reaction was, “Great. I don’t have to wear pants!” I was joking, but it seems I may also have been predicting the future a bit.

It will come as no great surprise that retailers track their sales fairly closely, and one trend that has shown itself over the past few weeks is that sales of pants are down.

Sales of clothing top cover us from the waste down has dipped a bit, but a lot of what is being sold is sweat pants, leggings and shorts. Actual pants have not been selling that well.

Clothing for the top half of our bodies has continued to sell.

If you’re looking for a reason, blame all the Skype and Zoom and every other type of online meeting platform. Point your webcam in the right direction and you only have to dress from the waist up. No one ever sees you from the waist down. Hopefully. Although sometimes the camera is a bit more wide angled than people suspect, and the choice to wear those old gym shorts with a jacket and tie shows itself to the world.

But in general, we seem to be leaning toward becoming a pantless society. Although I suspect that could change back come winter. At least around here.
