You either love the Ukulele or you don’t, and a Bridgewater woman happens to be a big fan.
Janice Rahme, who has been playing the Ukulele for a few years, decided to start a monthly jam for like-minded enthusiasts. This month she made a pitch to the Awesome Foundation to support her monthly F.U.N Ukulele Jam.
The foundation thought her idea was awesome and made her one of three finalists in the foundation’s $1,000 give-a-way. If her pitch wins, the plan is to use the money to pay the group facilitator Cynthia Myers and cover some advertising expenses.
“We want to keep the jams free and open to everyone. We have made sure that jammers have the songs we had been planning to work on and we are keeping in touch until we get back to some kind of normalcy,” said Rahme.
The idea for a monthly jam was sparked after noticing that there were jams held in other towns. She thought it was something she could arrange here, and it would certainly help with her practicing.
The first Ukulele jam was held in February and attracted more than 30 people. The turnout surprised her, and the second jam was just as well attended. Unfortunately by the time April rolled around the pandemic had put a stop to the in-person jams.
“I didn’t realize there were so many Ukulele players in this area, in fact I think almost everyone in this province has one in their attic!” she said.
She retired from her career in occupational health two weeks ago and is now enjoying her gardening and playing her Ukulele.
The winner will be announced via zoom starting at 7PM on Wednesday, May 27th.
