The Municipality of the District of Lunenburg wants to hear from you.
They are currently working on a new accessibility plan and are asking members of the public who either have a disability or represent someone who does to fill out a survey.
“We want to know if they have encountered barriers to accessing municipally-owned facilities or buildings, trails, parks, sidewalks and those types of things,” said Sarah Kucharski, Communications Officer, Municipality of the District of Lunenburg.
The request went out last week and is being promoted through social media, email lists and contact with community organizations who may have contact with persons with disabilities.
There is no accessibility plan for the Municipality currently, in fact there has never been one, said Kucharski.
“There are no guidelines in Nova Scotia so it’s something that has never come up before now. With the way this is being rolled out each municipality is creating their own guidelines in advance of provincial guidelines,” she said.
MODL is working with an Accessibility Committee-consisting of members of council and the public who either have a disability or represent someone who does-to come up with a plan that meets provincial guidelines and is reflective of what the community wants.
“We want to make sure that we get enough public feedback during this initial stage and also in the draft plan,” said Kucharski.
The deadline to submit the draft plan is April 2021-although that will now be delayed due to the pandemic.
The deadline to fill out the survey is June 31 and can be found on the MODL website.
