License-Free Fishing For NS Annual Sportfishing Weekend

Whether you’re a seasoned vet or have never cast a line, the province is encouraging everyone to give sportfishing a try this weekend.

The province’s annual Sportfishing Weekend is slated for Saturday, June 6th and Sunday, June 7th.

Anglers have permission to fish without a license on those dates, though all bag limits and other rules apply.

Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture Keith Colwell says since COVID-19 is still an issue, maintaining a physical distance is important even in the great outdoors.

Colwell says the three most popular catches are brook trout, chain pickerel, and bass.

The Minister notes that they’ve seen an uptick in sportfishing interest this year.

“A lot more people are participating by the number of licenses they’re selling,” he said. “Which is a very good thing. It’s a very stress-relieving activity and a lot of fun, and can also be a very quiet and pleasant thing to do.”

More than 67,000 Nova Scotians took part in sportfishing last year.
