What Would You Do If You Won?

I’m sure some people think about it. Probably in fairly general terms. But what would you do if you won the lottery?

Sure, maybe a new car. Maybe two. Possibly a new house. Help family and friends… although you’re likely to have a lot more of them than you thought.

But would you really be able to deal with a seriously huge big pile of money dropped on you? Honestly, I’m not sure I would.

I was reading about Laura Tutcho, a woman from Yellowknife who won a major jackpot last month. The first thing she did was get out of town. Really, when you think about it, that makes perfect sense. Not because you hate where you live or you now have enough money to see the world. The big reason goes back to all the family and friends that will be crawling out from under every rock and stump in the area.

In her case, someone apparently first suggested Edmonton, but she still knows a lot of people there. So she instead headed for Calgary. She then immediately hired a lawyer and financial advisor. They sat down and figured out a plan of what she wanted to do.

Winning a few dollars is one thing. Winning millions is another thing entirely. There would be no shortage of people around who would be able to tell you exactly what you should do with your new wealth. A lot of those people would also be looking to put large amounts of it in their own pockets. It wouldn’t be an easy thing to handle.

I find her story really interesting. And it’s made me realize… I have dreams, but I really don’t have a plan. Not that I really expect to ever have to worry about it. Which is another interesting point.

We buy the tickets, but most of us really don’t expect to win.
