Demand For Campsites Surges On Opening Day

Turns out one of the summer’s hottest tickets is…a reservation at a provincial campground.

Demand for camp sites in the province has exploded this year.

Online reservations started last week and some users encountered technical difficulties due to demand.

Parks Promotion & Development Officer Sandra Fraser says they’re aware of the issue.

“There were some technical difficulties on Wednesday, so yes we are working with our service provider to find out more about that and what can be done to make improvements there.”

Fraser says a lot of campgrounds saw double the amount of bookings compared to last year on opening day – and some, even more than that.

“Ellenwood for example, has seen a 348% increase in the number of reservations that were made on opening day this year versus last year,” she noted. “So that one was huge. Rissers and Graves are always popular.”

Reservations can only be made online or by phone, but campers must book in advance this year due to COVID-19 protocols.

“In normal years we do take reservations at the park, but not this year,” she explained. “So that’s one of our COVID-19 safety measures is that we will not be taking any on-site reservations this year so if you arrive at the park, you need to have already made your reservation ahead of time.”

Other COVID-19 safety measures include only offering reservations to Nova Scotians, reducing the number of campsites available, and only campers with reservations will be allowed to enter campgrounds.
