South Shore Drive-in Returns To Offer “Reel” Entertainment

Going to the Drive-in is the perfect way to enjoy a movie while social distancing.

It is with that in mind that the South Shore Drive-In will once again be providing reel entertainment after a six-year hiatus.

The drive-in project originally began in 2011 as a way to raise extra funds for students at Mill Village Consolidated School. Then called Principal’s Pics, it provided money for school programs, supplies and trips.

“We wanted to keep small schools open and it was our way of trying to show how important they were in Nova Scotia at that time,” said organizer Catherine Croft, who along with her husband Jason and fellow Mill Village resident Jessica Van Dyne-Evans are working on getting a permanent home for the drive-in.

Unfortunately the school was permanently closed in 2014 but Croft held on to the 20X40 foot screen with dreams of finding it a permanent home one day.

Hearing Prime Minister Justin Trudeau speak about drive-ins opening across Canada during one of his COVID-19 press conferences reignited that spark and plans for movie night began.

“I was raised to help others, everything I try and think up is for the betterment of my community so I really felt compelled to do something for all Nova Scotians-we have been through a lot lately and many of us are suffering from isolation,” she said.

There are four permanent poles set up at the Hank Snow Park in Liverpool and fundraising is underway to meet the $9,500 goal.

The first showing will be held at 9:30 July 4 at the Mill Village Fire Department located at 1519 Old Hwy 3. No word on what will be playing yet; organizers are mulling over asking people to vote on several choices.

Pre-packaged concession food will be sold to ensure a minimum of social contact and payment by cash or e-transfer can be arranged.
