Bridgewater’s Recreation Department has a really cool thing going.. “Games On The Go” and includes oversize games that can be played in the backyard. Check out the town’s webpage for more info.
But I wanted to tell you about the very hot backyard game that has been catching on this summer. It’s from Scandinavia and is called Kubb – rhymes with “tube” . Some have called this ancient game Viking Chess and it’s kind of a combination of lawn bowling and chess, with elements of horseshoes and curling.
Now, Kubb means “block of wood” and that’s what most of the equipment for the game is – blocks of wood. I’ve seen Kubb sets for sale online for 60 to a hundred bucks but if you have a family member, friend, neighbour or relative into woodworking it’s fairly simple to make the game pieces.
