Region of Queens Exploring Drilled Well Program

Help could be on the way for homeowners affected by this summer’s drought conditions.

The Nova Scotia government announced changes to the Municipal Government Act this fall.

It would allow municipalities to create a bylaw for a program to help pay for the cost up front of drilling a new well or expanding a current one.

The Region of Queens is exploring issue, according to Mayor David Dagley.

“We have asked staff at our council meeting to investigate the issues and bring a report back to council for further deliberations.”

The cost is expected to be applied to a homeowner’s property tax bill over an extended period of time.

The lack of rainfall this past summer caused roughly 2,000 wells in the South Shore and southwestern Nova Scotia to run dry.
