No. For those of us of a certain age, I am not about to pull a rooster out of a bag. But there is something pretty cool in the sky these days.
There’s a comet flying around up there.
Last weekend, Comet Neowise passed the sun and is visible to the naked eye, although binoculars are recommended. (Yes, it’s called Neowise. There are also a bunch of numbers and letters attached, but I wouldn’t want people to think Elon Musk has more offspring.) Provided we don’t have clouds. Or fog. Or clouds and fog. Which means around here our chances of actually seeing it are pretty slim these days, but it could happen.
Since last Friday, the comet has been visible about an hour before dawn near the northeastern horizon. For those who like to take pictures of things in the night sky, it has been something to look forward to. Although the weather has not exactly been cooperating.
This morning I did see people posting a few pictures. Pretty spectacular.
But next week, Neowise is going to switch things up. It’s tired of the getting up early thing, so it will start to be visible just after sunset near the northwest horizon. If Neowise doesn’t run out of gas, it could stick around later in the month and rise a bit higher in the sky.
So get out the binoculars and look up.
Now all we need is a big chair for two more to curl up in.
