Citizenship Rules Help Adoptive Parents

More parents can now pass on their Canadian citizenship to their children.

The federal government made the change to citizenship rules to benefit adoptive parents or parents with fertility issues who use methods like in-vitro fertilization.

Previously, a child born abroad who wasn’t genetically related to their Canadian legal parent did not automatically become a citizen.

Non-biological legal parents at birth and biological parents are now viewed equally as a child’s parent for the purposes of citizenship by descent.
