What Do You Remember About Your Grandparent’s Home?

One of my favourite time-wasters on Facebook is a group I belong to called Abandoned Nova Scotia which is mainly photo’s of abandoned cabins, homes, farmhouses and general structures around our fair province.

Back when I first joined I recognized one crumbling farmhouse as the nearest neighbours to my grandparent’s old farm. To make sure, I used Google Street View to find my grandparent’s old farm (it’s still standing and lived in by a family) Sure enough, half a mile down the old highway was the crumbling farmhouse where my grandparents and I would harvest rhubarb from a rhubarb patch in front of the place. Even back then it was not lived in.

I have a lot of fond memories of my grandparents’ farm. I remember the hand cranked water pump in the driveway, the woodshed, the big wood furnace down in the dug out basement.

As a kid exploring the barn, the surrounding fields, the brooks on the property, and the woodlot kept me busy for hours.

But the most memorable thing about my grandparents place was…. the outhouse. To this day I have a fear of falling in one.

Do you remember your grandparents home? What was most memorable about it?
