Chester Victims of Portapique Mass Shooting To Be Honoured by South Shore Memorial Drive

Two South Shore brothers are paying homage to their parents who were victims of the Portapique Mass Shooting with a special cruise.

Peter and Joy Bond, who lived in Chester before they retired to Portapique, are being remembered by their sons Cory and Harry this weekend with a memorial drive to Peggy’s Cove.

Denise Peterson-Rafuse of Communities Remember, who is helping organize the event, said the cruise idea had come from Peter’s profession as a truck driver.

“One of his dreams was to own his own Freightliner,” she said.

“Eventually, he was able to obtain one, and the boys will tell you stories about how growing up, being able to get into that big truck, how exciting it was and how he loved driving around with his family.”

For that reason they are encouraging anyone with a big rig, especially any Freightliners, to join in on the cruise Saturday as a way to remember Peter’s love of trucking.

The route they’ve chosen also carries a special sentiment as a tribute to their mother, Joy.

“The reason we’re going to Peggy’s Cove is because Joy loved lighthouses,” said Peterson-Rafuse, “So what’s more perfect than to go along the route that takes you to the iconic Peggy’s Cove lighthouse.”

The cruise will be led by RCMP members, and will make its way from the Church Memorial Park rink in Chester out to Peggy’s Cove starting at 11 am.

Following the cruise, the events continue on Sunday with the premiere of a special tribute video to Peter and Joy, sharing stories from their sons on growing up with the couple as parents.

The video will premiere on the Communities Remember Facebook page at 8 pm.
